Men’s Euro Cup, Qualification Round II – preview

27 teams on board, only 12 can stay after Sunday

With the new playing format, the Euro Cup reaches perhaps its cruellest phase: only the top two will go through from each group in the second qualifying round. This means that 15 of the 27 teams currently on board will finish their respective European campaigns.
All six groups look pretty much balanced featuring at least three sides which all seem to have a chance to make the eight-finals – but there are groups where all participants are strong enough to go for qualifying spots.

Perhaps Group A stands out – having three fine teams from the former Yugoslavia already ensures of adding some extra flavours to the contests. And besides Jadran (MNE), Solaris (CRO) and host Sabac (SRB), we have an Italian (Trieste) and a French (Pays D’Aix) in the mix, making the coming four days extremely exciting.

Just a few hundred kilometres away, in Zagreb, another group of death is set to offer premium entertainment for the water polo fans. Three former Champions League winners, host Mladost (CRO), Primorac (MNE) and Honved (HUN), a tough Greek side (PAOK) and a Spanish team (Mediterrani) compose the field here but only two will survive the weekend.

The other four groups will not disappoint the fans either as most of the matches scheduled in Strasbourg, Duisburg, Szolnok and Bucharest promise huge fights while the teams are hunting for the top two qualifying spots.
