Mehr „Gipfel“ und „Finale“ geht nicht, wenn die Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 und Waspo 98 Hannover ab 23. Mai im Best-of-5-Duell um die 97. Deutsche Wasserball-Meisterschaft der Männer aufeinandertreffen. Statistisch scheinen die Berliner zwar hochüberlegen: Sie wurden 36 Mal Meister seit 1979 im Vergleich zu nur einem Titel der Niedersachsen. Aber in den vergangenen zwei Jahren hat sich das über Jahre eindeutige Kräfteverhältnis dank exzessiver Einkaufspolitik von Waspo zum Zweikampf auf Augenhöhe gewandelt.
2017 und 2018 hat Hannover den Pokal gewonnen, vor Beginn der aktuellen Saison auch den DSV-Supercup. Und die Schützlinge von Trainer und Top-Sponsor Karsten Seehafer gewannen bei Punktgleichheit (dank des um ein Tor besseren direkten Vergleichs) die Hauptrunde. Und das ist entscheidend für den Heimbonus in der Endspiel-Serie. Wenn die Finalserie über die volle Distanz geht, darf Waspo also drei Partien im heimischen Hallen-Stadionbad spielen, Spandau aber nur zwei in der Schöneberger Schwimmhalle.
Interessant zu lesen ist die in der Diktion ungewöhnliche handzahme Finalprognose von Waspo-Coach Seehafer, die man fast so übernehmen kann. „Selten ist die Konstellation so ausgeglichen gewesen“, meint er und begründet: „Zwei Teams mit nationalen und internationalen Spitzenspielern, zwei Teams, die national kein anderes Team schlagen kann, zwei Teams mit starken Auftritten in der Saison“. Er erwarte, „harte und emotionale Finals im Wasser, im Umfeld und in der Presse“. Waspo-Präsident Bernd Seidensticker, Trainer des letzten Meisterteams von 1993 (mit Seehafer als Spieler), zur Rollenverteilung: „Wir sind nicht die Favoriten“, aber „wir sind pfiffiger, taktisch mutiger und motivierter“.
Wasserfreunde Trainer Petar Kovacevic hält dagegen, dass in diesem Finale nicht der Glaube entscheiden wird, sondern die Fähigkeit, „den Kopf klar auszurichten, die vorhandenen Potenziale punktgenau abzurufen, körperlich und geistig frisch zu sein“. Ein Spandauer Vorteil sei es aus seiner Sicht, dass das Team weniger auf individuelle Alleingänge und auf die Form Einzelner ausgerichtet sei, sondern am besten als Gesamtorganismus funktioniere. „Bei Hannover können Stars wie Brguljan oder Radovic an Top-Tagen vieles allein entscheiden, aber wenn es bei ihnen nicht läuft, kann auch der ganze Motor ins Stottern geraten. Das konnte unser Team in der Vergangenheit schon mehrfach erreichen. Und das muss auch diesmal unser Ziel sein!“ Das erste Spiel des Finals am Mittwoch werde eine ganz wichtige Nagelprobe darauf sein – und vielleicht schon den „Sound“ der ganzen Serie bestimmen.
