Die erste große Phase mit Topspielen in Serie beginnt für den deutschen Pokalsieger Waspo 98 Hannover am heutigen Sonnabend im fernen Russland: Am vierten Spieltag der Champions League gastiert die Mannschaft von Trainer Karsten Seehafer auswärts beim russischen Traditionsverein Dynamo Moskau, der mit einer der vier zusätzlichen „Wild Cards“ im Rücken bestens die Begegnungen der Hauptrundengruppe A gestartet ist. Die Partie startet aufgrund der Zeitverschiebung gegenüber der russischen Hauptstadt bereits um 17:15 Uhr deutscher Zeit und läuft wie gewohnt unter http://www.dailymotion.com/lentv auch im Livestream des LEN-Portals.
Russische Klubs spielten trotz guter Saläre international zuletzt kaum noch eine Rolle und gelangten in der 2013 eingeleiteten „Wild Card“-Ära der Champions Laegue bis dato nicht einmal mehr in die Gruppenphase des Wettbewerbs. Dieses war dem Niedergang des russischen Männerwasserballs nach 2004 und der dann auch starken Beschränkung bei der Verpflichtung ausländischer Spieler seitens des Verbandes geschuldet, doch leitet Traditionsklub Dynamo nun eine neue Ära ein und gilt bei der Rückkehr in den Wettbewerb mit seinem teilweise neuformierten Team nun sogar als ein heißer Kandidat für eine Endrundenteilnahme.
Für die Wasserballer aus der Hauptstadt ist die Teilnahme in der Gruppenphase selbst auch eine kleine Wiedergeburt: Gab es 1984 und 2000 zwei Siege im inzwischen abgeschafften Europapokal der Pokalsieger (und 1986 eine Finalniederlage im Landesmeisterwettbewerb gegen die Wasserfreunde Spandau 04), spielte der Klub international schon lange keine Rolle mehr und zählte zum Teil nicht einmal mehr zu den Teilnehmern der beiden LEN-Wettbewerbe. Auch national datiert der letzte Meisterschaftsgewinn ebenfalls schon aus dem Jahre 2002, nachdem Sthurm 2002 Tschechow und der langjährige Rivale Spartak Wolgograd die Titel und sich ausgemacht hatten.
Auch in der abgelaufenen Saison gab es für den 18-maligen Landesmeister in der heimischen Liga nur Rang drei hinter Wolgograd und Sintez Kasan, doch mit der „Wild Card“ für die Königsklasse könnten jetzt gänzlich neue Zeiten anbrechen: Mit der Planungssicherheit im Rücken verfügt der Hauptstadtklub in seinem neugeformten Kader jetzt über gleich sieben aktuelle Nationalspieler sowie mit Center Dusko Pijetlovic (Olympiasieger 2016), Nikola Raden und dem jungen Gavril Subotic nun auch gleich drei versierte Serben mit Auswahlerfahrung.
„Die sind stark“, hatte Waspo98-Trainer Karsten Seehafer schon vor dem ersten Hauptrundenspiel vor der Stärke des 18-maligen russischen Meisters gewarnt. Seehafer sah sich gleich am ersten Spieltag bestätigt, als der von Ex-Nationalspieler Marat Zakirov (Olympiamedaillengewinner 2000 und 2004) betreute Hauptstadtverein prompt mit 12:11 gegen Vorjahresfinalist Jug Dubrovnik (Kroatien) gewann. Zwar folgte dann eine 9:17-Auswärtsniederlage bei Medaillenaspirant Olympiakos Piräus (Griechenland), doch mit dem 14:10-Auswärtserfolg bei Serbiens Traditionsklub Partizan Belgrad teilen sich die Russen gemeinsam mit zwei anderen Vereinen derzeit Platz zwei in der Tabelle.
Damit liegt Moskau in der Gruppe A zugleich vor dem im laufenden Wettbewerb bisher erst einmal siegreichen DSV-Vertreter, so dass auf beide Teams ein Schlüsselspiel im Kampf um den immer noch greifbaren Endrundenplatz wartet: „Solche Spiele kann man gewinnen, muss man aber nicht“, sieht sich Seehafer in der Ausgeglichenheit der Gruppe B bestätigt. In der Formkurve der Niedersachsen hatten der Trainer wie auch das Fachpublikum zuletzt allerdings einen Durchhänger ausgemacht. Seehafer bescheinigte seinem Team „schlechten Wasserball“, bei dem man an Siege in den kommenden Spielen gar nicht zu denken brauche. „Zu Gute kann ich meinen Spielern nur halten, dass es jeder weiß, hoffentlich ….“
Beide Teams standen sich international bisher zweimal gegenüber, dieses allerdings in nur einer Spielzeit: In der Saison 1991/92 beendete Moskau im Viertelfinale des damaligen Europapokals der Pokalsieger mit einer 8:9-Niederlage im Stadionbad und einem 9:7-Heimerfolg nach Verlängerung denkbar die erste Europapokalkampagne der Niedersachsen, bei denen Karsten Seehafer damals noch als Spieler aktiv war. Damals zählten Russland und Deutschland noch zu den führenden Wasserballnationen. 26 Jahre später wollen beide Vereinsteams nun an bessere Zeiten wieder anknüpfen …
