Spandau ist der Favorit dieser Partie und würde im Endspiel auf den Gewinner des zweiten Duells, zwischen Hannover und Esslingen, treffen, in dem die Niedersachsen favorisiert werden.
Dieses Aufeinandertreffen von Spandau und Hannover wäre bereits das vierte der Saison nach dem 10:9 für die Berliner im Supercup, dem 5:5 in Hannover und dem 11:8 in Schöneberg erst vor zwei Wochen. Trotz dieses Leistungsvorsprungs des Rekordmeister und -pokalsiegers haben die Waspo-Verantwortlichen ihren Anspruch, den Titelverteidiger zu stürzen, bisher nicht zurückgeschraubt. Diese Konkurrenz stellt den willkommenen Anlass für Spandau dar, in den eigenen Anstrengungen noch besser zu werden. In der Champions League bei Partizan Belgrad hat es das Team leider nicht geschafft, den zuvor erreichten Aufwärtstrend fortzusetzen und endlich einmal einen internationalen Auswärtssieg zu erzielen. Stattdessen folgte im elften Match in Serie die lediglich durch ein Remis aufgebesserte zehnte Niederlage.
Umso stärker ist nun die Motivation für das Pokal-Final-Four. „Es gibt nichts anderes und nur diese eine Vorgabe: Wir wollen den Titel verteidigen! Es wäre der 30. Pokal-Titel für uns seit 1979. Das ist dabei ein ganz besonderer, ein statistischer Anreiz“, sagt Manager Peter Röhle, der als Trainer einmal gegen Hannover verlor: Im Finale 1998 musste sich Spandau den Niedersachsen (die auch 2003 noch einmal gewonnen hatten) mit 5:6 beugen.
Gastgeber OSC (2012 einmal beim Final Four) und der SSV Esslingen (2010 Pokal-Vize) sind beide Außenseiter beim Kampf um den Cup. Unterschätzen aber sollte man beide nicht.
Und auch dieses soll nicht vergessen werden: Parallel zum Männer-Turnier findet das Turnier der vier besten Frauen-Teams mit Titel-Verteidiger Bayer Uerdingen, Rekordsieger Blau-Weiß Bochum, Nikar Heidelberg und ETV Hamburg statt.
