Am kommenden Wochenende beginnt für das Wasserball-Team Deutschland der Männer in Posnan die Mission „Barcelona 2018“. Die Auswahl des Deutschen Schwimm-Verbandes (DSV) will sich in zwei Spielen gegen „Nachbar“ Polen durchsetzen und sich so das Ticket für die Wasserball-Europameisterschaften im Sommer (14. – 28.07.) in der katalanischen Mittelmeermetropole sichern. Für die Nationalmannschaft gilt es, sich am Samstag (24.02., Spielbeginn: 18 Uhr) eine gute Ausgangsposition für das entscheidende Rückspiel am 03.03. in Düsseldorf zu erarbeiten.
Angespannte Personalsituation
Bundestrainer Hagen Stamm wird im Vergleich zum Europa Cup noch einmal personell umbauen müssen. Stammtorhüter Moritz Schenkel (Waspo 98 Hannover, Prüfungen Studium) wird in drei Tagen ebenso wenig zur Verfügung stehen wie der geplante Ersatztorwart Florian Thom (SG Neukölln, Fingerbruch). Vorübergehend zur Nummer eins aufrücken wird deshalb Kevin Götz (White Sharks Hannover), den verletzten Thom wird Christopher Hans (ASC Duisburg) ersetzen.
Zudem fehlen der jungen Mannschaft mit Center Mateo Cuk (Wfr. Spandau 04, Schulter-OP) und Nationalmannschaftskapitän Julian Real (Waspo 98 Hannover, private Gründe) weiterhin zwei wichtige Stützen. „Auch Tobias Preuß ist für Samstag fraglich. Er hat sich in Palermo an der Schulter verletzt und wird noch untersucht. Mit Lukas Küppers haben wir zumindest einen Rückkehrer zu verzeichnen“, so der Bundestrainer.

Trotz der angespannten Personalsituation lässt Stamm keine Ausreden gelten: „Für uns ist die EM-Qualifikation ein Muss, und wir sind in beiden Begegnungen sicherlich der Favorit. Aber die Polen werden sich gegen uns teuer verkaufen wollen. Der polnische Wasserball arbeitet sehr engagiert daran, international den Anschluss zu schaffen. Dass wir zuerst auswärts antreten werden, eröffnet uns die Möglichkeit, vor heimischer Kulisse den Sack zuzumachen. Das ist eine schöne Vorstellung, die sich aber nur erfüllt, wenn wir den Gegner nicht unterschätzen.“
Für Stamm haben die Begegnungen gegen Polen auch einen besonderen Reiz: „Ich freue mich, dass wir es mit unseren Nachbarn zu tun bekommen. Polen ist ein attraktives Los, auch weil es immer wieder enge Verbindungen zum polnischen Wasserball gegeben hat. Namen wie Piotr Bukowski, Slawomir Andruszkiewicz oder Lukasz Kieloch kennen Wasserball-Fans in Polen und Deutschland.“
