Einen gebrauchten Abend erlebte am achten Spieltag der Champions League der deutsche Vertreter Waspo 98 Hannover: Die Niedersachsen unterlagen zum Rückrundenauftakt gleich mit 7:13 (2:4, 3:5, 0:3, 2:1) gegen Spaniens Serienmeister CN Atletic Barceloneta und haben damit die letzten Endrundenchancen so gut wie vergeben. Bei einem spanischen Torfestival im Stadionbad war Aleksandar Radovic mit drei Treffer erfolgreichster Werfer auf Seiten der Hausherren.
Binnen vier Tagen bekamen die Anhänger des deutschen Pokalsiegers in zwei Topspielen neben dem hohen Potential des Teams auch dessen aktuelle Achillesferse geboten: Die Leistungsschwankungen sind immer noch arg groß oder zumindest größer als bei Mannschaften, die schon länger in der europäischen Spitze mitmischen. Die Waspo98-Macher waren nach der Schlusssirene daher mehr als enttäuscht: „Wir hatten nie eine Chance“, sagte Trainer Karsten Seehafer, „ich weiß nicht, was bei uns los war. Wir waren überhaupt nicht griffig, haben die Spanier nie unter Druck gesetzt. Da war nichts zu sehen bei uns von den vergangenen guten Wochen.“
Den Niedersachsen gelang es in der Tat nicht, die Spanier mit einer Mischung aus Druck und Beweglichkeit aus dem Rhythmus zu brechen. Bereits im ersten Abschnitt fing sich Waspo 98 in nicht einmal fünf Minuten vier Gegentreffer bei numerischem Gleichstand und einen 1:4-Rückstand ein, wobei der postwendende 1:1-Ausgleich durch Pere Estrany per Freiwurf nur ein Strohfeuer blieb. Nach einem 2:4-Pausenstand, kamen die Hausherren im zweiten Abschnitt beim 3:4 und 4:5 (11.) noch einmal auf jeweils einen Treffer heran.
Ähnlich wie zwei Wochen zuvor bei der 12:13-Niederlage in Barcelona hätte es ein offener Schlagabtausch mit einem Torfestival werden können, allerdings konnten die Niedersachsen im weiteren Verlauf des Spieles diesmal im Angriff nicht in gleicher Form zurückschlagen. Die Spanier brillierten nun im Überzahlspiel, während die Hausherren hier ihre Chancen liegen ließen und sich zudem im Gegenzug verwundbar zeigten. Der 5:9-Halbzeitstand erwies sich an diesem Abend bereits als eine Vorentscheidung.
Nach dem Seitenwechsel hatten die Spanier vor erneut 700 Zuschauern in Niedersachsens größter Schwimm- und Wasserballarena weiter Oberwasser und bauten ihre Führung sogar bis auf 12:5 (21.) aus. Der Rest der Partie gestaltete sich dann torärmer, wobei der Schlussabschnitt mit 2:1 an den DSV-Vertreter ging. Die Treffer der Hausherren teilten sich im 138. Europapokalspiel der Vereinsgeschichte neben Aleksandar Radovic (3) Darko Brguljan (2), Pere Estrany und Ante Corusic.
„Solche Spiele gibt es halt mal“, sagte Vereinspräsident Bernd Seidensticker, „da muss dann halt auch gratulieren.“ Und der „spanische Abend“ ist noch nicht ganz vorbei: Eine Zusammenfassung der Partie läuft am kommenden Sonnabend von 19 Uhr an beim bundesweit empfangbaren Spartensender „Sport1“. Für Waspo 98 geht es international in einer weiteren Mittwochspartie am 28. Februar an gleicher Stelle gegen den griechischen Meister Olympiakos Piräus weiter.
