Das Wasserball-Team Deutschland der Männer wird die Gruppenphase im Europa Cup (15. bis 17. Februar) ohne Center Mateo Cuk (Wfr. Spandau 04) bestreiten müssen. In Palermo (Italien) trifft die Auswahl des Deutschen Schwimm-Verbandes (DSV) bei der Premiere des neugeschaffenen Wettbewerbs in der Gruppe C mit Gastgeber Italien (WM-Sechster), Montenegro (WM-Fünfter) und Russland (WM-Achter) ausnahmslos auf starke Gegner.
„Leider fällt Mateo für mindestens vier Wochen aus. Er musste sich einer Nachoperation an seiner rechten Wurfarmschulter unterziehen. Für ihn haben wir Ferdinand Korbel nachnominiert“, so Bundestrainer Hagen Stamm, der eventuell auch auf Nationalmannschafts-Kapitän Julian Real verzichten muss: „Sein familiäres Umfeld erlaubt Julian momentan nur kurzfristige Zusagen. Erst am Montag wissen wir definitiv Bescheid. Aktuell planen wir ohne unseren Kapitän, dafür mit Reiko Zech, so dass wir in Palermo in der Centerverteidigung in jedem Fall genügend ‚Kilos‘ in die Waagschale werfen können.“ Auch Lukas Küppers (Wfr. Spandau 04) muss auf die Länderspielreise nach Italien verzichten. Für den 21-Jährigen stehen wichtige Prüfungen im Studium an. Mateo Cuk wird der Nationalmannschaft auch in der anstehenden EM-Qualifikation gegen Polen (24.02. und 03.03.2018) nicht zur Verfügung stehen.
