Der Wasserball-Verein Darmstadt unterlag heute im Nordbad im Finale um den Hessenpokal Frankfurt II mit 5:8 (2:1, 0:3, 1:2, 2:2). Damit wandert der im Vorjahr eroberte Pokal an den Main. Dennoch feierten die zahlreichen Zuschauer das Team und ließen die beiden Finalspiele zu einem stimmungsvollen Event in der Traglufthalle werden. Im Vorspiel errang SC Wiesbaden Platz drei durch einen ungefährdeten 15:5 Sieg gegen SCW Fulda II.
Das erste Team der Darmstädter erlitt im Finale die erste Niederlage in der laufenden Saison, zeigte aber eine ansprechende Leistung. Ersatzgeschwächt ohne Spielertrainer Lars Hechler und Benjamin Siegl trat Darmstadt wieder mit einer sehr jungen Mannschaft an. Das Team von Frankfurt II hatte mächtig Respekt vor den Darmstädtern und ließ gleich zehn Spieler antreten, die auch in der zweiten Bundesliga für die dortige erste Mannschaft der Frankfurter spielen. Von Anfang an zeigte sich, dass sich hier zwei Teams auf Augenhöhe begegnen, die allerdings ganz anders spielten. Die Darmstädter, schwimmerisch überlegen, konnten sich gegen die meist körperlich überlegenen Frankfurter oft nicht durchsetzen, versuchten wieder ihr variantenreiches Angriffspiel. Die Frankfurter hielten hinten mit ihrer körperlichen Stärke dagegen und setzten vorne ihre Erfahrung ein. Nach dem Auftakt mit der 2:1 Führung für den WVD im ersten Viertel, gewann Frankfurt das zweite Viertel mit drei Toren. Zum einen konnte Frankfurt mehr Überzahlspiele verwerten und zum anderen verteidigten sie nun sehr diszipliniert, so dass Darmstadt wiederholt zu lange brauchte, um die Gefahrenzone zu erreichen. Zu Beginn des dritten Viertels konnte Frankfurt erstmals einen Drei-Tore-Vorsprung herausspielen und verteidigte diesen fortan. Es gab weiterhin Chancen auf beiden Seiten, die jeweils starke Torleute vereitelten. Darmstadt konnte noch zweimal auf zwei Tore verkürzen zum 4:6 und 5:7, aber letztlich schaukelten die Routiniers aus Frankfurt das Spiel über die Zeit.
Spielertrainer Lars Hechler lobte die gute Defensivarbeit und zeigte sich insgesamt angesichts der personellen Stärke des Gegners mit vielen Zweitbundesliga-Spielern sehr zufrieden mit der Leistung des jungen Darmstädter Teams.
In der gut besuchten Halle herrschte Volksfeststimmung angeregt nicht zuletzt durch DJ MBU, der mit verschiedenen Personen Interviews führte und die Spieler vorstellte. So lobte der hessische Wasserballwart Manfred Vater im Interview die große Begeisterung der zahlreichen Darmstädter Fans, die für eine stimmungsvolle Atmosphäre sorgten. Außerdem unterstrich er die hohe Qualität der nachrückenden Jugendlichen, die in den Finalspielen auf Seiten Wiesbaden, Fulda und Darmstadt zum Einsatz kamen.
