Nur fünf Mannschaften hatten in der Landesgruppe Ost für den Pokalausscheid in der Altersklasse U14 gemeldet. Somit konnte gleich die Endrunde im Modus „jeder-gegen-jeden“ ausgetragen werden. Am Samstagmittag hieß der SV Zwickau v. 1904 den SSC Erfurt, den OSC Potsdam und die beiden Berliner Vertreter Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 und SG Neukölln herzlich willkommen.
Vor heimischer Kulisse gingen die 04er als Pokalverteidiger der ehemaligen U13 und diesjähriger Favorit ins Turnier. Das erste Spiel gegen die recht jungen und mit weniger als 13 Spielern antretenden Thüringer war ein gutes Warm-up für die anstehenden Aufgaben. Bei dem sehr deutlichen Erfolg konnten alle Spieler des SV04 erste Spielminuten und fast alle Torerfolge verbuchen. Ohne einen Sieg wurden die Thüringer Fünfter der Pokalendrunde 2018.
Für die Westsachsen stand am Abend noch die Partie gegen den OSC Potsdam auf dem Plan. Bis zur Halbzeit konnte ein 10:2-Vorsprung herausgearbeitet werden. In den letzten beiden Vierteln stellten die 04er das Ergebnis auf ein jederzeit ungefährdetes 16:4. Damit waren zwei weitere wichtige Zähler der Mission Pokalverteidigung eingefahren.
Nach dem Erfolg gegen den OSC galt es am Sonntag im nächsten Spiel eine Vorentscheidung herbeizuführen. Gegen die Wasserfreunde aus Spandau stiegen die 04er hochmotiviert ins Wasser. Aus einer konzentrierten Abwehrarbeit heraus gelang es den Mulde-Städtern mit zunehmender Spieldauer immer besser, den Spandauer 04ern ihr Spiel aufzuzwingen. Die Spandauer Offensive wurde hoch stehend verteidigt und immer wieder zu Ballverlusten getrieben. Die zunehmend konditionellen Vorteile konnten über schnelle Konter immer öfter zu direkten Torerfolgen ausgespielt werden. Die Berliner Schlüsselspieler wurden insgesamt erfolgreich aus dem Rennen genommen. Über die Viertelergebnisse 4:0, 5:0 und 6:0 konnte am Ende ein hoch verdienter 19:0-Erfolg verbucht werden.
Mit jeweils einer Niederlage gegen den SV Zwickau 04 und Erfolgen gegen Erfurt und Neukölln spielten die Havelanrainer Potsdam und Spandau Platz 2 des Pokals aus. In der spannendsten Partie dieser Endrunde gelang es bis zum letzten Viertel keiner Mannschaft, sich abzusetzen. Mit einem 2:2 ging es für die beiden Kontrahenten ins letzte Viertel. Kurz vor Schluss konnten die Spandauer das 2:4 für sich markieren, doch die Potsdamer schlugen in den letzten dreißig Sekunden noch zweimal zurück. Das Unentschieden reichte am Ende Spandau, um sich über das Torverhältnis den Vize-Titel 2018 zu sichern. Bitter für die Potsdamer, dass das deutliche Chancenplus in dieser Partie am Ende nicht umgemünzt werden konnte und die Torausbeute im Spiel gegen Erfurt – im direkten Vergleich mit den Spandauern – zu gering war.
Im letzten Spiel der Endrunde trafen die Westsachsen auf die SG Neukölln. Auch diese Pflichtaufgabe konnte mit einem deutlichen Ergebnis gelöst werden. Die Neuköllner rangieren damit in der Endabrechnung auf Platz 4.
Mit einer souveränen und geschlossenen Mannschaftsleistung konnte der Pokal erfolgreich verteidigt und sich eine gute Ausgangslage für den Deutschen Wasserballpokal gesichert werden.
