Schatten aber auch einiges an Licht brachte für den deutschen Pokalsieger Waspo 98 Hannover der erste Auftritt des neues Jahres: Die Niedersachsen unterlagen am sechsten Spieltag der Champions League auswärts mit 7:11 (0:3, 0:3, 3:1, 4:4) beim Starensemble des griechischen Meisters Olympiakos Piräus, der weiterhin ungeschlagen die Tabelle der Hauptrundengruppe A anführt, und mussten damit die vierte Niederlage hinnehmen.
Vielleicht wäre sogar etwas mehr drin gewesen, doch beim ersten Duell der Vereinshistorie mit dem in vielen Sportarten bekannten Klub (beim Wasserball Champions League-Gewinner 2002) bekam die Waspo98-Sieben den Unterschied zwischen gleichwertig sein und phasenweise hervorragend mitspielen in den entscheidenden Details vor Augen geführt: Nach mehr als fünf Minuten ausgeglichenen Spieles auf Augenhöhe ließen die Niedersachsen ihre dann nicht nur ihren ersten beiden Überzahlchancen liegen, sondern die Griechen trafen ihrerseits beide Male im direkten Gegenzug und erhöhten kurz vor der Pause auf 3:0.
Auf eigene Tore mussten die Gäste in der Folge dann sogar bis zum Seitenwechsel warten, ehe Julian Real nach dem gewonnenen Anschwimmen mit der ersten Chance des Abschnitts in Überzahl auf 1:6 verkürzte. Nun waren auch die Niedersachsen im Spiel und sorgten für einen munteren Schlagabtausch zwischen beiden Teams. Die Waspo98-Treffer teilten sich Darko Brguljan (2), Jorn Winkelhorst, Pere Estrany, Erik Bukowski, Aleksandar Radovic und Julian Real.
Das Ergebnis war aus Sicht der Gäste daher am Ende versöhnlich, es hätte aber auch gerne mehr sein dürfen: „Wir haben zu lange gebraucht, bis wir unsere Chancen zu Toren umsetzen. Es war mehr möglich, nach dem schlechten Start in der ersten Hälfte dann aber auch nicht mehr zu realisieren“, zog Trainer Karsten Seehafer als Fazit. In dem eng gestrickten Spielplan der Hauptrunde geht es bereits am 25. Januar in Barcelona weiter, und dort wollen die Niedersachsen dann erneut ihre Chance suchen: „Wir müssen die einfachen Fehler abstellen, dann gibt es auch Möglichkeiten in den nächsten Spielen.“
