Titelverteidiger Waspo 98 Hannover hat im nationalen Pokalwettbewerb (DSV-Pokal) erneut die Runde der letzten Acht erreicht, sorgte allerdings vor heimischer Kulisse beim Achtelfinalduell gegen den SSV Esslingen für Erstaunen: Die Niedersachsen hatten beim 13:2 (1:0, 3:2, 6:0, 3:0)-Heimerfolg gegen den Ligarivalen im zweiten Abschnitt zwischenzeitlich sogar mit 1:2 (13.) zurückgelegen. Am heutigen Sonntag folgt ebenfalls im hannoverschen Stadionbad bereits von 10 Uhr an dann in der Pro A der Deutschen Wasserball-Liga (DWL) dann auch das erste Punktspielduell beider Teams.
Die Niedersachsen hatten im Pokalduell nach dem denkwürdigen Europapokalauftritt in Budapest allerdings einmal mehr rotiert und gleich fünf Stammkräften mit WM-Erfahrung (Julian Real, Predrag Jokic, Erik Bukowski, Pere Estrany und Moritz Schenkel) eine Spielpause verordnet. „Ein Tor Vorsprung reicht“, wurde auf Tribüne zum geflügelten Wort des Tages, allerdings schienen das die verbliebenen Waspo98-Akteure längere Zeit wörtlich zu nehmen. Hatte es vor Wochenfrist noch ein 25:2-Schützenfest im Ligaduell gegen den SV Bayer 08 Uerdingen gegeben, zeigte der Titelververteidiger diesmal allerdings arg fahrig im Angriff. Kurios wurde es dann, als die stark kämpfenden Gäste trotz des krankheitsbedingten Fehlens von Torjäger Heiko Nossek mit einem hervorragenden Andrian Hausmann zwischen den Torpfosten nach zwei Treffern von Marvin Thran und Hannes Rothfuß ihrerseits mit 2:1 in Führung gingen.
Danach war allerdings der Bann gebrochen: Noch vor dem Seitenwechsel erzielten die Hausherren drei Treffer in Serie zur 4:2-Halbzeitführung. Im weiteren Spielverlauf sollte kein Esslinger Treffer mehr fallen, und der dritte Abschnitt ging nun sogar mit dem Teilresultat von 6:0 an den Champions League-Teilnehmer. „Wir haben nicht ein Viertel verloren“, holte Trainer Karsten Seehafer einen etwas anderen, faktengesicherten Blick auf den Spielverlauf hervor, war mit der ersten Halbzeit allerdings alles andere als zufrieden. Die Waspo98-Tore teilten sich beim ersten von zwei Auftritten des Wochenendes Aleksandar Radovic (3), Marin Ban, Jorn Winkelhorst, Darko Brguljan (alle 2), Winkler, Preuß, Sekulic und Marek Tkac. Am Sonntag geht es dann um Punkte, und hier muss Tabellenführer Waspo 98 in einer vorgezogenen Partie des fünften Spieltages beim um den ersten Platz dann vorlegen.
