Der SC Wedding empfängt am kommenden Samstag im Achtelfinale des Deutschen Wasserballpokals den A-Gruppenvertreter SV Bayer Uerdingen. Das Spiel im Kombibad an der Seestraße startet um 17.30 Uhr. Die Berliner freuen sich auf einen harten Kampf – aus dem sie trotz Außenseiterrolle am Ende siegreich hervorgehen wollen.
Mit den Auswärtssiegen zuletzt gegen Poseidon Hamburg in der Deutschen Wasserball Liga (DWL) und im Pokal gegen den Frankfurter SC konnten die Aktiven des SC Wedding etwas Selbstvertrauen sammeln. Die Erfolge will die Truppe von Coach Sören Mackeben nun in eine Siegesserie ausbauen. Die Uerdinger sind dabei in einer Reihe anstehender schwieriger Partien der Auftaktgegner. Eine Woche später warten dann in der DWL noch Krefeld 72 und Duisburg 98.
„Unsere volle Aufmerksamkeit gilt natürlich dem Spiel gegen Bayer Uerdingen“, erklärt der Berliner Trainer Sören Mackeben. „Wir bereiten uns intensiv vor und werden alles dafür geben, in die nächste Runde zu kommen.“
Auch Philipp Kotowski weiß, dass Wedding noch eine Rechnung mit den Gästen aus dem Ruhrgebiet offen hat. Vor eineinhalb Jahren verpassten die Berliner in den damaligen Pre-Playoffs um den Einzug in die A-Gruppe der DWL trotz zweier Heimsiege knapp den Aufstieg. „Hier wollen wir anknüpfen. Wir gehen zwar als Außenseiter ins Rennen, aber sicher nicht als Kanonenfutter“, sagt der Weddinger Kapitän.
