Nach dem spektakulären 8:6-Auftaktsieg gegen Italiens Vizemeister AN Brescia ist der deutsche Pokalsieger Waspo 98 Hannover am zweiten Hauptrundenspieltag der Champions League nun erstmals auswärts gefordert: Bei dieser ersten großen Fahrt der Saison gastieren die Niedersachsen bei Ungarns „Nummer drei“ OSC Budapest, der ebenfalls als Anwärter auf einen Endrundenplatz gilt, und dieses unter erschwerten Bedingungen: Spitzenspieler Julian Real wird aus privaten Gründen nicht mit dabei sein. Die Partie in der Imre-Nyeki-Schwimmhalle startet um 20:30 Uhr und läuft wie gewohnt unter http://www.dailymotion.com/lentv im Livestreamkanal der LEN-Webseite.

Der Auftritt im Lande des Rekordolympiasiegers ist allerdings einmal mehr eine dicke sportliche Herausforderung, wobei dieses für die Gegenwart erst recht gilt: Ungarn verfügt derzeit über die wohl stärkste Wasserball-Liga der Welt. Die Nationalspieler sind anders als noch in der Vergangenheit aktuell durch die Bank weg im eigenen Land aktiv; die gut eine Handvoll Toppklubs verfügen zudem jeweils über gleich mehrere ausländische Stars der Sportart. Erst am vergangenen Wochenende standen sich hier an der Donau mit Szolnoki VSC und Ferencvaros Budapest (10:8 nach Fünfmeterwerfen) sogar gleich zwei ungarische Teams beim Duell um den europäischen Supercup gegenüber.
Auch der derzeit wohl beste Hauptstadtklub im Lande des amtierenden Vize-Weltmeisters verfügt wie schon in der Vorsaison wieder über einen ebenso spielstarken wie illustren Kader. Besonders pikant beim heutigen Duell: Waspo98-Star Darko Brguljan trifft sogar auf seinen sechs Jahre älteren Cousin Drasko, der erst vier Monate zuvor hier in Budapest mit der am Ende fünftplatzierten Auswahl Montenegros ein gutes WM-Turnier gespielt hat. WM-Medaillen haben bei gleicher Gelegenheit sogar die beiden Ungarn Miklos Gor-Nagy und Balasz Erdelyi sowie die Serben Sava Randelovic und Nemanja Ubovic gewonnen. Der OSC blieb zum Auftakt mit einem 11:7-Auswärtserfolg bei Partizan Belgrad (Serbien) ebenfalls siegreich: Der heutige Gewinner bleibt also in der Gruppe B mehr als nur „oben dran“.
Vergangene Saison standen sich die heutigen Kontrahenten bereits beim damaligen Erstrundenturnier an gleicher Stelle gegenüber, als es quasi zu Saisonbeginn nach einer sehenswerten Partie einen knappen 12:11-Erfolg der Ungarn gab. Beide Teams erreichten später dann als Qualifikanten die zu jener Zeit noch aus nur zwölf Teams bestehende Hauptrunde. Auch diesmal gelten die Ungarn nach Einschätzung der Niedersachsen als Favorit, doch der DSV-Vertreter zeigte sich bereits in den ersten Saisonpartien in guter Form. Sollte es wieder einen guten Start geben, könnte in der derzeitigen Wasserball-Hauptstadt der Welt durchaus was drin sein.
