Die älteren Semester erinnern sich vielleicht noch an die Zeit, als die Printmedien in Berlin fast täglich große Artikel über den Wasserballsport verfassten. Berlin hatte diese Sportart ganz plötzlich neu für sich entdeckt. Welch Wunder, denn die Erfolgsmeldungen ließen ihnen ja gar keine andere Wahl. Deutsche Meisterschaft, Deutscher Pokal, Deutscher Supercup wurden Jahr für Jahr an Spree und Havel geholt, errungen von einem jungen Team mit hochtalentierten Spielern.
Namen wie Peter Röhle, Hagen Stamm, Roland Freund, Frank Otto und Thomas Loebb hatten einen besonderen Klang, allesamt auch Nationalspieler. Auch Uwe Gassmann und der Mexikaner Armando Fernandez, der später eingebürgert wurde, bereicherten die Wasserballszene. Und wenn im Herbst die Europapokalspiele begannen, war die Schöneberger Schwimmhalle bis auf den letzten Platz besetzt.
Der von Dr. Günter Schwill, dem damaligen Spandauer Wasserballwart, lancierte Begriff „Berlin – Wasserball-Hauptstadt Deutschlands“ wurde gern von den Medien aufgegriffen. Und das alles mehr als zehn Jahre vor der deutschen Einheit!
Der Vorlauf
Angefangen hatte alles 1976 mit der Fusion der beiden Spandauer Schwimmvereine zu „Wasserfreunde Spandau 04“. Hier übernahm Dr. Schwill das einflussreiche Ressort des Wasserballwarts. Defizite mussten abgebaut und Kontakte geknüpft werden, gleichzeitig erfuhr Trainer Alfred Balen die maximale Unterstützung bei der Zusammensetzung seiner Idealmannschaft. Schon im Folgejahr kämpfte Spandau in der neu geschaffenen Bundesliga gegen Würzburg um den Titel – und verlor ihn erst im letzten Spiel in der sprichwörtlich letzten Sekunde.
1978 kam die Weltmeisterschaft nach Berlin. Viele Wasserballkämpfe begeisterten, doch das Spiel der deutschen Nationalmannschaft gegen den aktuellen Olympiasieger Ungarn besonders. Unvergesslich das Abendspiel im Berliner Olympiastadion. Vor toller Kulisse trennte man sich gegen die Magyaren um ihren Star Dr. Tamas Farago 6:6 unentschieden.
Fazit: Deutschland brauchte viel mehr Spielpraxis in der Spitzenklasse. Die Idee vom DSV-Supercup reifte. Nur eine bedeutende und wertvolle Trophäe konnte hierfür den passenden Rahmen schaffen. Diese Trophäe hatte Dr. Schwill bei einem Besuch im Antikenmuseum in Athen erworben. Es war die Nachbildung einer antiken Trophäe „Kopf des Jünglings von Marathon“. Als Schenkung übergab er sie dem DSV-Wasserballwart Bodo Hollemann mit der Bitte, sie als ewigen Wanderpreis alljährlich ausspielen zu lassen zwischen Meister und Pokalsieger, und nannte den Wettbewerb „DSV-Supercup“.
Die erste Ausspielung des Supercups erfolgte 1979. Im Februar war Spandau Pokalsieger geworden, im Sommer erstmals Deutscher Meister, genau passend zum 75. Vereinsjubiläum.
Im Oktober ging es gegen den langjährigen Rivalen SV Würzburg 05. Das Spiel endete mit einem Torrausch der Spandauer. 9:2 (2:0,3:1,2:0,2:1) wurde der fünffache Deutsche Meister besiegt durch Tore von Uwe Gassmann und Roland Freund (je 3), Armando Fernandez (2) und Frank Otto (1). Die beiden Gegentore schoss Wolfgang Mechler (2).
Das internationale Schiedsrichtergespann bestand aus Viktor Selzsam (Deutschland) und Boris Markarov (UdSSR).
Das Jahr 1979 sollte den Beginn einer neuen Ära in Deutschland markieren. Spandau begann einen unglaublich langen Höhenflug, der bis heute anhält.
Von Jahr zu Jahr wurde die Spandauer Überlegenheit im deutschen Wasserball größer, Jahr für Jahr gingen die drei nationalen Titel nach Berlin (Wasserball-Hauptstadt!). Nach dem siebten Supercup-Gewinn fand sich kein Ausrichter mehr, der diese einseitige Partie ausrichten wollte. Für mehr als zehn Jahre ruhte der Supercup. Erst im Jahr 1997 erfolgte ein Revival, diesmal als interessantes Vierer-Turnier mit den besten Mannschaften der Republik: WF Spandau 04, Waspo Hannover, SV Würzburg 05 und SC Rote Erde Hamm.
Spandau gewann knapp mit 5:4 (1:1,0:1,1:2,3:0) gegen SV Würzburg 05, Waspo Hannover sicherte sich Rang 3 durch ein 6:4 gegen SC Rote Erde Hamm. Die Berliner Torschützen waren Shorey Rodriguez (2), Lasse Noerbaek, Dirk Klingenberg und Raul de la Peña (je 1).
Als Trainer der Spandauer fungierte Peter Röhle, der damit Pokal-Rekordgewinner wurde, nach sieben Titeln als Spieler (von 1979 bis 1985) und 1997 als Trainer.
Das erste DSV-Supercup-Spiel am 12. Oktober 1979
Es folgten sieben Jahre, in denen jeweils Spiele um den DSV-Supercup stattfanden (von 1997 bis 2003).
Erstmals im Jahr 1998 (bei der 9. Ausspielung) eroberte Waspo Hannover die Trophäe. Unter den Augen des DSB-Präsidenten Manfred von Richthofen holte sich Waspo überlegen mit 7:5 (nach 7:2-Führung) in Berlin-Schöneberg die Trophäe.
Im Jahr darauf konterte Spandau in Hannover mit dem gleichen Ergebnis von 7:5 zu seinen Gunsten. Wieder war Peter Röhle der Coach der Spandauer, für ihn und Spandau Titel Nr. 9.
Das Jahr 2000 sah die verpasste Olympia-Qualifikation der Nationalmannschaft. Während die Waspo-Spieler sich wenigstens ihren 2. Supercup-Erfolg, wieder in Berlin, mit 6:4 (1:0,2:2,2:1,1:1) sicherten, liefen die Spandauer von Anfang an einem Rückstand hinterher und blieben machtlos. Die Tore für Spandau: Alexander Elke (2), Thomas Schertwitis und Timo Purschke (je 1). Für Waspo schossen Marc Politze (3), Sören Mackeben, Sven Reinhardt und René Huke (je 1).
Spandauer Siege 10 –12
In den Folgejahren polierten die Spandauer weiter an ihrer beeindruckenden Bilanz. Sie siegten 2001 in Stuttgart, 2002 in Duisburg und 2003 wieder in Berlin dreimal ganz deutlich.
Seit Hagen Stamm 2000 das Amt des Bundestrainers übernommen hatte, entstand eine gewisse Sogwirkung Richtung Berlin. Marc Politze und Sören Mackeben hatten Waspo verlassen und suchten bei Spandau neue sportliche Herausforderungen. Als das Supercup-Spiel 2003 Spandau – Waspo mit 20:4 erschreckend einseitig verlief, war das sportliche Interesse völlig abgesunken, der DSV-Supercup trat einen neuen 10-jährigen Tiefschlaf an.
Ab 2014 gab es wieder großes Interesse an der Ausrichtung. Waspo Hannover hatte mächtig aufgerüstet und wollte seinen 3. Titel holen. Das Spiel gegen Spandau war äußerst gleichwertig und wurde gegen Schluss sehr spannend, doch mit 10:9 rettete sich Spandau nach 10:5-Führung noch gerade über die Zeit. Die 10 Spandauer Tore schossen Maurice Jüngling (3), Martin Famera und Marin Restovic (je 2), Christian Schlanstedt, Erik Miers und Moritz Oeler (je 1).
Für Hannover trafen Andreas Schlotterbeck und Erik Bukowski, zwei Ex-Spandauer, sowie Bence Toth (je 2). Außerdem Mate Balatoni, Pedrag Jokic und Bojan Paunovic (je 1).
2015 und 2016 fielen die Spandauer Erfolge Nr. 14 und 15 recht leicht an den Supercup-Dominator. ASC Duisburg (12:4) und Bayer 08 Uerdingen (16:7) legten jeweils in Berlin keine besondere Werbung für diese Sportart ein.
Supercup Nr. 18 jetzt für 2017
Die neue DSV-Führung um Rainer Hoppe möchte in diesem Jahr ein zweitägiges Event mit einer Viererbesetzung arrangieren: WF Spandau 04, Waspo Hannover, ASC Duisburg und OSC Potsdam. Auf die beste Mannschaft wartet sportlich fair die traditionsreiche Trophäe „Jüngling von Marathon“, die ihren Namen wegen ihres Fundortes in der Bucht von Marathon, keine fünfzig Kilometer von Athen entfernt, erhalten hat. Schleppfischer verspürten bei ihrer mühevollen Arbeit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts plötzlich ein großes Gewicht in ihrem Netz. Es war aber kein Fisch, sondern eine klassische Bronzeplastik aus der Zeit des berühmten griechischen Bildhauers Praxiteles (390 – 320 v. Chr.), die heute als Ganzkörperplastik im Archäologischen Nationalmuseum von Athen steht.
Der Stifter der Trophäe „Jüngling von Marathon“ wünscht allen vier Mannschaften und den Zuschauern spannende und faire Spiele zum Wohle der Sportart Wasserball.
