(prg) Die Weidener Wasserballer stecken zwar immer noch mitten drin, in der Saisonvorbereitung, müssen jedoch am kommenden Samstag gleich das zweite Pflichtspiel der neuen Saison bestreiten. In der zweiten Runde des Deutschen Wasserballpokals 2018 (15:10 in der ersten Runde gegen Blau-Weiß Bochum) reisen die Oberpfälzer zum einzigen, noch im Wettbewerb verbliebenen Oberligist, DJK-SV Duisburg. Der NRW-Oberligist profitierte vom Rückzug des Altmeisters SV Cannstatt und erreichte durch ein Freilos die Runde zwei. Nominell sind die Gäste aus der Oberpfalz favorisiert, auch wenn sie nicht vollständig auf die Westreise gehen. Wichtige Spieler werden fehlen, dafür muss die Nachwuchsreihe ran.
In der zweiten Runde wurden die acht B-Gruppen-Vertreter der Deutschen Wasserball-Liga zu den Siegern der ersten Runde in den Lostopf beigemischt. Keinen davon erwischten die Weidener in der Auslosung, dafür einen rangniedrigsten aus dem Teilnehmerfeld, den Oberligist aus DJK-SV Duisburg. Nachdem mit Bochum der Vizemeister der 2. Wasserball-Liga West in der ersten Runde bereits besiegt wurde, sind die Chancen, einen NRW-Oberligist zu bezwingen natürlich sehr groß, doch die Weidener werden nicht in Vollbesetzung nach Duisburg fahren. Kapitän Thomas Kick, Andreas Jahn und Sean Ryder, sind aus privaten Gründen nicht verfügbar, damit fehlen wichtige Stützen des Teams in der Abwehr, wie auch im Sturm. Trainer Thomas Aigner muss es versuchen, die Lücken mit jüngeren Spielern zu schließen und mit einer geschlossenen Energieleistung dem Oberligist Paroli zu bieten, um das Achtelfinale zu erreichen: „In dieser Trainingsphase sind keine Wunder zu erwarten und die Ausfälle lassen sich nicht einfach so kompensieren. Dennoch, fahren wir nach Duisburg, um zu gewinnen, das ist klar. Wenn wir in der ersten Runde siegten, wollen wir natürlich mehr, auch, wenn es im Achtelfinale schon gegen die besten Teams Deutschlands gehen und schon die Endstation drohen würde“ so Aigner zu der Aufgabe am Rhein. Im Achtelfinale stoßen die Teams der DWL-Gruppe A dazu, also die besten acht Teams Deutschlands, dafür steigen aber die Chancen auf ein weiteres Heimspiel, denn die rangniedrigere Mannschaft bekommt nach der Auslosung das Heimrecht. Selbst dafür wollen die Weidener die dritte Runde erreichen.
