Deutschlands Wasserballer haben beim Acht-Nationen-Turnier im serbischen Nis einen Fehlstart hingelegt. Die Auswahl des Deutschen Schwimm-Verbands (DSV) musste zum Auftakt des zweiten Turniers unter der Führung des neuen Bundestrainer Patrick Weissinger (Esslingen) eine hohe 6:14 (0:3, 1:3, 2:6, 3:2)-Niederlage gegen den WM-Sechsten Griechenland hinnehmen.
„Wir haben noch nicht so funktioniert, wie der ‚Patti‘ sie eingestellt hat“, beklagte Mannschaftsleiter Thomas Maier (Stuttgart) wie schon zehn Tage zuvor bei dem ersten Turnier unter Weissinger-Regie im nordspanischen Portugalete auch in Nis eine völlig verkorkste Auftaktpartie. Die deutschen Tore teilten sich im ersten von fünf Spielen im Lande des amtierenden Europameisters bis zum Sonnabend Paul Schüler (2), Heiko Nossek, Julian Real, Moritz Oeler und Timo van der Bosch.
Am Mittwoch sind in der Gruppe A der WM-Vierzehnte China (9 Uhr) und Vize-Weltmeister Montenegro (16 Uhr) die weiteren Vorrundenkontrahenten der DSV-Auswahl, die aufgrund der verpassten Qualifikation für die 25. Juli in Kasan (Russland) startende Weltmeisterschaft bereits für die Olympiasaison 2015/2016 testet.
