Deutschlands Wasserballer kämpfen mit dem ersten Rückrundenspiel zumindest spielerisch weiter um den Anschluss an die Weltspitze und können nach drei Niederlagen in den drei bisherigen Vorrundenspielen weiterhin für die Europameisterschaft 2016 in Belgrad (Serbien) und die nachfolgende Olympiaqualifikation in Italien ohne Druck testen. Nach den Querelen zum Jahreswechsel mit der nachfolgenden Beurlaubung von Bundestrainer Nebojsa Novoselac (Berlin) ist auch weitere Konsolidierung der angeschlagenen Teampsyche angesagt, wobei am Neckarufer letztmals der Duisburger Vereinstrainer Arno Troost auf der deutschen Bank sitzen wird. Dem Vernehmen soll im Umfeld der morgigen Partie dann auch eine Trainerlösung präsentiert werden, die bis zu den Olympischen Spielen 2016 Bestand haben soll.
Das morgige Zwischenspiel am Neckar passt durchaus in die aktuellen Planungen, zumal gegen den amtierenden EM-Elften der Weltliga-Sieg der laufenden Saison her soll. 2002 hatten die Russen sogar den ersten Weltliga-Wettbewerb gewonnen, aktuell liegt das junge Team in der Europa-Gruppe B nach einem Auswärtssieg in Spanien überraschend hinter Titelverteidiger Serbien auf Rang zwei. Auch für die Wasserballfans aus dem Südwesten sollte die Partie eine gute Gelegenheit für internationalen Anschauungsunterricht sein. Nach den bisherigen Lände Weltliga-Spielen in Hamburg und Bremen, den Europapokalduellen in Berlin und Hannover sowie dem jüngsten Bundesliga-Spitzenspiel in Duisburg gastieren Deutschlands Wasserballer am Neckar.
Auch der Tabellenzweite kämpft international um Anschluss nach oben und ist ein zu schlagender Kontrahent um einen Olympiaplatz 2016: Die nach 2004 aus der Weltspitze verschwundenen Osteuropäer hat seit 2008 jeweils die Qualifikation für die Olympischen Spiele wie auch die Weltmeisterschaften verpasst und war als historischer Tiefpunkt des russischen Wasserballs dann sogar bei der Europameisterschaft 2012 nur Zaungast gewesen. Zumindest die WM-Abstinenz wird kommenden Sommer enden, da die diesjährigen Titelkämpfe im heimischen Kasan (24. Juli bis 9. August) zur Austragung gelangen. Zudem wurde dem zuletzt komplett neuformierten Team auch spielerisch eine sichtbar aufsteigende Form bescheinigt.
Auch die in den vergangenen Jahren regelmäßig herausgespielten deutschen Erfolge gegen den zweimaligen Olympiasieger scheinen derzeit der Vergangenheit anzugehören. Bei dem aus deutscher Sicht ansonsten wenig glücklich verlaufenen Europameisterschaften 2014 siegte DSV-Auswahl nach einer Energieleistung am Ende noch glücklich mit 9:8, allerdings folgte im ersten Länderspiel der neuen Saison dann eine 9:12-Auswärtsniederlage beim Weltliga-Auftakt in Wolgograd. Bei den jüngsten Erstrundenturnieren der EM-Qualifikation haben die Russen vor Wochenfrist das Parallelturnier im polnischen Gorzow Wlkp. (Landsberg an der Warthe) beherrscht und sich dort vor dem Gastgeber an die Spitze gesetzt.
Die DSV-Auswahl geht vor Ort mit einem vorläufigen Aufgebot von insgesamt 15 Spielern aus fünf Erstligisten in die Vorbereitung der Partie. Neulinge wird es nicht geben, allerdings hat sich das Stuttgart-Aufgebot gegenüber der jüngsten Türkei- und Niederlande-Reise auf einigen Positionen geändert, so dass sich weitere Aktive für kommende Aufgaben präsentieren können. Beim Duell gegen den Gruppenzweiten werden wie gewohnt 13 Spieler zum Einsatz kommen, so dass noch zwei der Feldspieler gestrichen werden. Gespielt wird auf Anordnung des Weltschwimmverbands FINA in diesem Wettbewerb zu Testzwecken hinsichtlich möglicher Regeländerungen auf einem von 30 auf 25 Meter verkürzten Spielfeld.
