Das von zahlreichen Fans mit Spannung erwartete Finalduell um den 46. deutschen Wasserball-Pokal der Männer brachte im Potsdamer „blu“ einen unerwartet deutlichen Sieger: Vorjahrgewinner Waspo 98 Hannover setzte sich vor 500 mehr als erstaunten Zuschauern gleich mit 12:8 (2:1, 3:1, 3:4, 4:2) gegen den amtierenden deutschen Meister Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 durch und konnte damit als erster Herausforderer der bis in das Jahr 1979 zurückreichenden Spandau-Ära im deutschen Wasserball einen gewonnenen DSV-Pokal erfolgreich verteidigen. Für die ambitionierten Niedersachsen war es nach 1998, 2003 und 2017 zudem der vierte nationale Pokaltitel der Vereinsgeschichte.
3:1 Siege und 2:0 Titel lautet nunmehr die aktuelle Saisonbilanz der beiden deutschen Spitzenteams im direkten Saisonvergleich, erstaunlicher aus Sicht der Fans und Experten mutete jedoch der Spielverlauf an: Rekordgewinner Spandau wollte sich für die krachende 4:9-Halbfinalniederlage der vergangenen Pokalendrunde in Düsseldorf revanchieren und den angestammten Titel zurückholen, wie die Berliner im Vorfeld hatten durchblicken lassen, doch genau dieses gelang beim Wiedersehen an der Havel weder beim Schlussresultat noch beim spielerischen Eindruck. „Das war wie in Düsseldorf, auch wenn der Spielverlauf nicht ganz so eindeutig war“, kommentierte ein DSV-Vertreter die Partie.
Nach dem überzeugenden Champions League-Auftritt unter der Woche gegen den ungarischen Vertreter OSC Budapest zeigten sich die Mannschaft von Trainer Karsten Seehafer auch an der Havel wieder in Spiellaune. Eine konzentrierte Vorstellung bündelte sich mit engagierter Abwehrarbeit, während bei Spandau an diesem Nachmittag vieles im Argen lag. Die Berliner wirkten durch die Bank weg einfallslos, teilweise sogar mental abwesend, und bis auf Marko Stamm konnte sich kein Akteur des Meisters entscheidend in Szene setzen. Darüber hinaus stach Hannovers Schlussmann Moritz Schenkel im Duell der beiden Torhüter seinen Gegenüber Laszlo Baksa klar aus und wurde bei der Siegerehrung als bester Spieler des Finalwochenendes geehrt.
Auch der Spielverlauf verlief überraschend glatt: Spandau gelang einzig beim 1:1-Ausgleich durch Nikola Dedovic (5.) ein Gleichstand, allerdings zogen die Niedersachsen danach über einen 2:1-Pausenstand schnell auf 4:1 (10.). Spandau kam in der Folge nie entscheidend näher und konnte an diesem Nachmittag auch lediglich sieben Überzahlspiele erzwingen. „Es ist immer schwierig, einem Rückstand hinterherzulaufen“, äußerte sich Spandaus Spielführer Marko Stamm nach dem Spielende gegenüber dem regionalen Fernsehsender rbb, allerdings erfuhr Berlins dreimaliger Torschütze in dieser Partie nur wenig Hilfe seiner Mannschaftskameraden. Einzig der dritte Abschnitt ging mit 4:3 an den Titelverteidiger, wobei in dieser Phase allerdings Hannovers Center Ante Corusic mit gleiich drei Treffern den Meister auch hier ergebnistechnisch auf Abstand hielt.
Spandaus niederländischer Nationalspieler Lucas Gielen verkürzte hier mit dem letzten Angriff des Spielviertels auf 6:8 und hielt die Berliner noch einmal im Rennen, doch diese letzten Hoffnungen zerstoben im Schlussabschnitt schnell: Pere Estrany traf in Überzahl zweimal von linksaußen zum 10:6 (26.) für den Titelverteidiger, so dass die Niedersachsen bereits Minuten vor dem Spielende die Feierlichkeiten einleiten konnten, zum Hannovers viermaliger Torschütze Darko Brguljan sogar auf 11:6 erhöhen konnte. „Die saßen ganz tiefenentspannt auf der Bank und haben die eigenen Eckbälle bejubelt“, kommentierte ein DSV-Funktionär die Schlussphase der Partie. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite wirkten die an diesem Tag regelrecht „abgekochten“ Spandauer geradezu apathisch.
Für die ambitionierten Niedersachsen war es der dritte nationale Titel binnen 17 Monaten, und ebenso wie auf der Tribüne fiel auch das Fazit der Vereinsvertreter nach dem mit Spannung erwarteten Wiedersehen in Potsam deutlich aus: „Das war im Stile einer Spitzenmannschaft“, freute sich Hannovers Vereinspräsident Bernd Seidensticker, der bei den Pokalsiegen von 1998 und 2003 noch selbst als Trainer am Beckenrand gestanden hatte. „Hannover hat verdient gewonnen, wir haben kein Mittel gefunden, um sie wirklich zu knacken“, sagt auf Spandauer Seite ein sichtlich enttäuschter Manager Peter Röhle, „das war heute nicht das, was wir wirklich leisten können.“
„Das einzige Gute daran ist: Wir wissen jetzt, was wir besser machen müssen“, resümierte Spandaus Trainer Petar Kovacevic, der bis zum ersten Finalduell beider Teams um die deutsche Meisterschaft am 23. Mai vor heimischer Kulisse gut zweieinhalb Wochen Zeit hat, eine Antwort auf die ernüchternde Partie zu finden. Zuvor sind beide Teams am Mittwochabend noch einmal hochkarätig international im Einsatz: Am 14. und letzten Hauptrundenspieltag der Champions League empfangen die in diesem Wettbewerb erstmals seit 2003 wieder für die Endrunde qualifizierten Spandauer Montenegros Titelträger Jadran Herceg Novi (19:30 Uhr, Schöneberger Schwimmsporthalle). Waspo 98 gastiert parallel dazu auswärts bei Italiens Vizemeister AN Brescia und wird im Anschluss gemeinsam mit dem Gastgeber bis zum Sonnabend weitere Trainingseinheiten in der Lombardei bestreiten.
