Am letzten Wochenende reiste die U14 des SSV Esslingen zum ersten nationalen Höhepunkt, den Deutschen Pokalmeisterschaften, ins sächsische Zwickau. Den Esslingern ist Zwickau wohlbekannt, war man doch schon in den letzten beiden Jahren – noch als U13-Team – zu Qualifikations- bzw. Endrundenturnieren im dortigen „Glück Auf“-Schwimmbad zu Gast. Das 2013 errichtete Bad zeigt beispielhaft, wie man mit 15 Millionen Euro ein hochfunktionelles Sportbad mit DSV-gerechtem 50m-Becken und 3m-Sprunganlage bauen kann. Zwickau mit seinen ca. 90.000 Einwohnern ist dabei durchaus mit Esslingen vergleichbar.
Am Samstagabend um 19.30 Uhr trafen die Esslinger auf Ihren ersten Gegner, den SV Krefeld 72, nachdem man sich vorher die Partie der weiteren Kontrahenten Zwickau vs White Shark Hannvoer angeschaut hatte.
Das Auftaktspiel ist schnell erzählt. Die vom ehemaligen Cannstadter Spieler und Olympia-Bronzemedaillen-Gewinner im Wasserball, Thomas Huber, trainierten Krefelder waren wegen mehrerer Konfirmationsfeien nur mit zehn Spielern angereist. Erwartungsgemäß erwiesen sich die Esslinger von Beginn an als überlegen und bekamen alle aufgestellten Spieler ausgiebige Einsatzzeiten. Die Partie endete mit 25:1 (6:0, 5:1, 6:0, 8:0) und so war dem SSVE bereits zu diesem Zeitpunkt ein Medaillenrang sicher.
In beiden Begegnungen am Sonntag ging es gegen namhafte Gegner. Im ersten Sonntagsspiel gegen den ewigen Rivalen, die White Sharks aus Hannover, waren die Rollen dann allerdings doch ähnlich verteilt wie am Samstag und zeichnete sich früh ein Esslinger Sieg ab. Lediglich das letzte Viertel gestaltete sich etwas enger. Am Ende stand es in der Partei 5:17 (1:3,1:5, 0:5,3:4). Um den Stammspielern, für das sich abzeichnende Finalspiel gegen Zwickau am Nachmittag eine größere Erholungsphase zu ermöglichen, wurden die letzten beiden Viertel dabei überwiegend von den Ergänzungsspielern bestritten.
Am späten Nachmittag standen sich damit Esslingen und der bis dahin ebenfalls ungeschlagene Gastgeber aus Zwickau als echte Finalisten im Spiel um den Pokaltitel gegenüber. Die Mannschaften kennen sich: Zuletzt stand man sich im Endspiel der Deutschen Meisterschaft der U13 im Stuttgarter Inselbad gegenüber. Damals siegte Esslingen in überlegener Manier.
Die diesjährige Pokalbegegnung zeigte, dass die Zwickauer mit dem Heimbonus im Rücken gewillt waren, sich diesmal den Titel zu sichern. Im ersten Viertel ging Zwickau zunächst mit 1:0 in Führung, musste die Spielzeit dann aber doch mit 1:3 an die Esslinger abgeben. Tatsächlich sollte der anfängliche Gegentreffer die letztmalige Führung für die Zwickauer bleiben. Im zweiten Quartal konnte Zwickau zwar nochmals auf 3:4 verkürzen, aber im dritten und vierten Viertel machte die Esslinger U14 die Sache mit 1:3 und 2:5 klar. Am Ende stand auch in dieser anfänglich engen Begegnung doch ein deutlicher Sieg von 6:14 Toren.
Damit ist die U14 des SSV Esslingen Deutscher Pokalsieger 2018. Sie zeigte auch bei diesem nationalen Turnier, dass sie im Moment in Deutschland eine Klasse für sich ist. Dafür steht allein schon die ganz außergewöhnliche Tatsache, dass diese Mannschaft inzwischen schon seit anderthalb Jahren in ihrer Altersklasse kein Spiel mehr verloren hat!
Aber nicht nur das Sportliche, sondern auch die hohe soziale Kompetenz der Spieler, die mit den Mitgliedern aller Mannschaften des Endturniers vor und während der Spiele im freundschaftlichen Austausch stehen, ist eine Erwähnung wert. Zum Teil haben sich regelrechte Freundschaften entwickelt, die quer durch Deutschland über die neuen Medien auch zwischen den sportlichen Begegnungen gepflegt werden.
Einen wichtigen Anteil an dem Erfolg in diesem Jahr hat auch der U16-Trainer Patrick Weissinger, bei dem ein großer Teil der U14Mannschaft regelmäßig trainiert. Dort profitieren die Jugendlichen vom fortgeschrittenen Technik- und Taktiktraining in der höheren Altersstufe.
Der U14-Trainer Winfried Henrich, Cotrainerin Iris Schneider und Torwarttrainer Dirk Aigner sind sehr zufrieden mit der Entwicklung der Mannschaft und glauben, dass die Chancen, auch im weiteren Verlauf des Sportjahres, sowohl in der Alterklasse U14 als auch in der U16 ganz vorne mit zuspielen, sehr gut stehen. Ein großer Dank gilt auch Mannschaftsbetreuer Kosta Petikis und Teambegleiter Nikos Reizis.
