1300 Kilometer liegen zwischen Berlin und Genua. Der deutsche Wasserball-Rekordmeister Spandau 04 würde gern Anfang Juni eine Reise dorthin machen. In dieser schönen Stadt am Meer möchte das Team sich über den größten Vereinserfolg seit 15 Jahren erfreuen.
2002 standen die Berliner im Final Four der Champions League – in Genua! Jetzt sind sie auf dem allerbesten Wege, erneut in das Endturnier des Königswettbewerbs einziehen. Das Tournier wird jetzt im Final-8-Modus ausgetragen, aber wieder in Genua.
Je vier Teams aus den beiden Hauptrunden-Gruppen erreichen das Finale. Erstmals erreichten zwei deutsche Teams die Hauptrunde. Allerdings hat Waspo Hannover nach neun der 14 Spieltage mit der 7:12-Heimniederlage gegen Olympiakos Piräus als A-Gruppen-Siebenter alle Finalchancen beerdigt.
Anders Spandau 04, das bislang eine fast makellose Champions-League-Hauptrunde spielt. Klare Spitzenleistungen waren die Heimsiege gegen den Titelverteidiger Szolnok und gegen ZF Eger sowie die knappe Niederlage gegen das Starensemble von Pro Recco Genua. Aber bei allen Spielen wird ein großer Team- und Kampfgeist sowie starkes Durchsetzungsvermögen deutlich.
Das 11:9 am Mittwoch gegen Rumäniens Meister Steaua Bukarest – man muss nur auf die Viertelergebnisse schauen – beweist dieses sportliche Leistungsniveau.
Der Sieg gegen diese routinierten Gäste, deren Altersschnitt gen 30 tendiert, wurde angemessen gefeiert. „Wir haben schlecht und schwach angefangen, aber gut aufgehört“, resümierte Kapitän Marko Stamm und hielt fest: „Manchmal reicht ein überragendes Viertel für den Sieg.“ Gemeint war der dritte Spielabschnitt, als Spandau mit 2:4-Halbzeitrückstand wie verwandelt ins Becken zurückkehrte. Binnen vier Minuten machten die Hausherren mit einem 5:1-Lauf aus dem Rückstand einen 7:5-Vorsprung. Zwar wehrte sich Steaua noch mehrfach, aber es blieb immer ein Kurzeit-Zucken, das Spandau mit eigenen gelungenen Aktionen wieder im Keim erstickte.
So hieß es am Ende 11:9 für die Gastgeber. Lucas Gielen war mit vier Treffern, meist hammerharte Würfen aus der Distanz, der erfolgreichste Schütze.

Da Pro Recco als Final-8-Gastgeber endrundengesetzt ist, werden in dieser Gruppe nur noch drei weitere Final-Tickets vergeben. „Spandau 04 in der Champions-League-Endrunde wäre ein echter Glücksfall für den gesamten deutschen Wasserball und seine Positionierung in der hiesigen Sportlandschaft“, befindet Peter Röhle.
Spandaus ausstehende Spiele in der Hauptrunde:
Eger (A/18.3.), Alphen (H/31.3.), Szolnok (A/18.4.), Sabadell (A/28.4.) und Herceg Novi (H/9.5.).
„Wir müssen jetzt einfach in jedem Spiel unsere Leistung bringen, dann ergeben sich die positiven Folgen ganz von allein. Es wäre absolut fatal, wenn wir jetzt noch scheiterten“, meint Petar Kovacevic.
