Waspo 98 Hannover beschenkte sich zum Abschluss des erfolgreichen Jahres 2017 (Pokaltitel und Supercupgewinn) noch einmal selbst: Der deutsche Pokalsieger zeigte sich am fünften Spieltag der Champions League in Spiel- wie auch Torlaune und fegte Serbiens frischgebackenen Pokalsieger Partizan Belgrad gleich mit 16:6 (5:2, 4:0, 4:2, 3:2) aus der Halle. Vor noch einmal über 500 begeisterten Zuschauern im Stadionbad traf Torjäger Aleksandar Radovic gleich sechsmal für die Niedersachsen, die damit in der Hauptrundengruppe A weiter im Rennen um einen der vier Endrundenplätze verbleiben.
Die Spieler des 28-maligen serbischen Meisters wussten an diesem Abend nicht, wie ihnen geschah: Zwar traf das Team aus der Hauptstadt nach nur 40 Sekunden bereits mit dem ersten Angriff, doch der deutsche Pokalsieger schlug postwendend zurück. Der von Trainer Karsten Seehafer für die heutige Vorstellung mit einem Sonderlob bedachte Predrag Jokic war binnen 16 Sekunden gleich zweimal erfolgreich, so dass die Gästeführung schneller aus dem Gedächtnis der Anwesenden verschwand als eine Sternschnuppe. Und es ging munter weiter: Waspo 98 gewann den Eröffnungsabschnitt gleich mit 5:2, und der Torreigen der Lokalmatadoren schien an diesem Abend kein Ende nehmen.
Der Auftritt der nach der krachenden Niederlage gegen den nationalen Rivalen Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 zuletzt stark vom eigenen Trainer und dem Umfeld stark kritisierten Waspo98-Sieben wirkte wie eine Selbsttherapie: Die Gäste aus dem Lande des Olympiasiegers, die sich noch am Wochenende den nationalen Pokaltitel gesichert hatten, fanden an diesem Abend kein Mittel gegen die agile Abwehr des deutschen Vertreters, der im Anschluss dann auch im Angriff oftmals gnadenlos zuschlug. Beim Stande von 8:2 (13.) war die Partie so gut wie entschieden, und die Niedersachsen erhöhten direkt nach dem Seitenwechsel sogar auf 10:2.
Erst im Schlussabschnitt wurde die Partie etwas ausgeglichener, allerdings hatte Karsten Seehafer dort beim Stande von 14:5 (27.) zwischenzeitlich sogar seinen zweiten Torwart Luka Sucic gebracht (der nahtlos an die Leistung des etatmäßigen Schlussmanns Moritz Schenkel anknüpfte). „Radovic scheint mit seinem alten Verein Mitleid gehabt zu haben“, kommentierte DWL-Funktionär Jens Witte (Buxtehude) die Schlussphase der Partie allerdings hatte der Waspo98-Torjäger zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits sechsmal für die Niedersachsen getroffen.
„Es läuft in der Saison vielleicht nicht alles nach Plan, doch wir sind auf Kurs“, freute sich Karsten Seehafer nach einem denkwürdigen Abend. Die Tore warfen neben Aleksandar Radovic (6/2) Darko Bgruljan (3), Julian Real (3/1), Predrag Jokic (2) und Erik Bukowski (2/1) und waren damit um einiges besser verteilt als in den Partien zuvor. In den sozialen Medien löste die hohe Niederlage des serbischen Rekordmeisters teilweise Entsetzen aus: Zwar hatte niemand damit gerechnet, dass das junge Partizan-Team unter Europas Besten in der Tabelle oben mitspielt, doch das Resultat und der Spielverlauf kamen an diesem Abend für den Traditionsverein einer regelrechten Hinrichtung gleich.
Für die Niedersachsen war es dagegen im 135. Europapokalauftritt der Vereinsgeschichte einer der bisher höchsten Siege auf der internationalen Bühne und im dritten Anlauf auch der erste Erfolg gegen Serbiens Toppklub, der unter anderem auch 1964 den ersten Europapokalwettbewerb zu seinen Gunsten entschieden hatte. Für den DSV-Vertreter geht es in der weiterhin sehr ausgeglichenen Hauptrundengruppe A international nun am 13. Januar beim griechischen Meister Olympiakos Piräus weiter, der mit vier Siegen und einem Unentschieden derzeit die Tabelle des Achterfeldes anführt. Vor heimischer Kulisse folgt am 7. Februar gegen Spaniens Serienmeister CN Atletic Barceloneta die Fortsetzung.
