Zufriedenstellend war das Resultat nicht: Obwohl sie auch diesmal die Chance hatten, standen die Spieler des deutschen Pokalsiegers beim zweiten internationalen Auswärtsauftritt der laufenden Saison im Duell mit einem potentiellen Tabellennachbarn am Ende ebenso ohne einen Punktgewinn da. Ärgerlich aus Sicht der Gäste: Die Niedersachsen hatten durchweg einen guten Zugriff auf das Spielgeschehen, doch die entscheidenden Aktionen gelangen nach dem Seitenwechsel dem russischen Vertreter.

Der Motor des Waspo98-Sturms stockte in dieser Phase trotz guter Möglichkeiten, und die Moskauer legten direkt nach dem Beginn des Schlussabschnitts mit zwei aus Gästesicht unglücklichen Centertoren zum vorentscheidenden 9:5 (27.) nach. Den Niedersachsen blieb nur ein Freiwurftreffer durch Kanonier Aleksandar Radovic (29.) zum 6:9-Endstand. „Auf das sechste Tor müssen wir zu lange warten, dabei hatten wir genügend Möglichkeiten“, haderte Trainer Karsten Seehafer mit seiner Sturmreihe.
Für die Niedersachsen war es bereits der zweite Europapokalauftritt in Folge, bei am Spielende lediglich sechs Treffer auf der Habenseite standen. Die Torgefahr verteilte sich auch diesmal auf zu wenige Akteure, doch für einen Erfolg an der Moskwa hätte dabei schon das Einmaleins des Wasserballs gereicht: „Ich wünsche mir einmal eine Quote beim Überzahl wie im Training. Dann würde vieles anders aussehen. Hätte, würde, könnte …“, sagte Seehafer.
Dabei kommt die ausgemachte Schwäche zur Unzeit: Die Partie in der russischen Hauptstadt war nur der Auftakt einer ganzen Serie von Toppspielen vor den Feiertagen: Am kommenden Sonnabend gastiert der große nationale Rivale Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 zum Spitzenspiel der Deutsche Wasserball-Liga (DWL) im Stadionbad, am 16. Dezember Serbiens Topklub Partizan Belgrad. Die Nationalspieler sind zudem unter der Woche zunächst einmal mit ihren Auswahlteams in der Weltliga im Einsatz, wobei die deutsche Auswahl am Mittwochabend in Dresden auf Russland treffen wird.
