Bis zum Jahreswechsel haben die Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 noch drei Spiele vor sich. Alle drei Spiele haben es in sich und können weichenstellend für die Hauptstädter sein. Nach dem Samstag-Gastspiel in Holland folgt am 16.12. das DWL-Spitzenspiel bei W98 Waspo Hannover und am 20.12. die letzte Begegnung des Jahres. In heimischer Halle wird das Berliner Team gegen ZF Eger (Ungarn) antreten.
Zunächst aber reist das Team der Wasserfreunde zum AZC Alphen nach Holland. Alphen nimmt aktuell in der Champions-League den letzten Platz ein. Nach dem sensationellen Heimerfolg (10:9) gegen den Titelverteidiger Szolnok (Ungarn) am 29. November in Schöneberg hat die Mannschaft von Trainer Petar Kovacevic mit 2:1 Siegen den dritten Platz der Achter-Gruppe erreicht. Aus dieser Gruppe werden sich die führenden 4 Teams für das Final Eight im Frühjahr 2018 in Genua qualifizieren. Aus der Gruppe der Berliner ist allerdings der Gastgeber Pro Recco bereits gesetzt.
Spandau fährt als Favorit nach Alphen. Das ist eine Situation, die es in den vergangenen Jahren auf CL-Ebene nur selten gab. „Wir wollen diese Konstellation selbstbewusst annehmen und dem Spiel unseren Stempel aufdrücken“, sagt Präsident Hagen Stamm. Alphen hatte sich im Vorsommer beim Final Six in Budapest bei der LEN um eine Wild Card beworben und diese für die kommenden beiden Spielzeiten erhalten.
In den ersten drei Partien mussten die Niederländer allerdings Niederlagen hinnehmen. Zunächst verloren sie beim Titelfavoriten Pro Recco (1:19), zeigten sich dann aber daheim gegen Jadran Herceg Novi (Montenegro/7:14) und auswärts bei CN Sabadell (Spanien/10:12) deutlich verbessert.
Für das Spiel gegen die Wasserfreunde wollen die von Ron van der Wild und Nemanja Stevanovic trainierten „Oranjes“ ihr Leistungsniveau weiter anheben. Alphen firmiert wegen seines Hauptsponsors (seit 2011/12), einem Design- und Modeunternehmen, unter dem etwas irritierenden Namen AZC Moscow. Das Team ist multinational besetzt. Neben niederländischen Akteuren spielen fünf Serben und ein Grieche, ein Ungar, ein Italiener sowie ein Neuseeländer.
Ähnlich wie bei Spandau 04 ist die Vereinsgeschichte Alphens ruhmreich. 15-mal (1977-2004) war Alphen Meister, 21-mal Pokalsieger. 1977 spielte Alphen erstmals im Europacup. 1980 stand das Team im Final 4 der Pokalgewinner und 1981 in Barcelona in dem der Meister. Seit 2006 konnte Alphen auf internationaler Bühne nicht mehr mithalten. Seither strebt das Team ein Comeback an.

I do like the manner in which you have framed this particular difficulty and it really does provide me personally a lot of fodder for consideration.
