Das Team von der Adria kann beim Gastspiel am Maschsee auf mehr als nur „bekannte“ Namen setzen: Mit dem bereits mehrfach ausgezeichneten Torhüter Marko Bijač, Loren Fatović, Luka Lončar, Maro Joković und dem aus Spanien eingebürgerten Linkshänder Xavier García gehörten gleich fünf Jug-Akteure zum Aufgebot Kroatiens, das Ende Juli in Budapest nach Siegen über Olympiasieger Serbien und Gastgeber Ungarn Weltmeister wurde. Center Luka Lončar schaffte beim jüngsten Treffen der Weltbesten auf seiner Position auch den Sprung in das siebenköpfige Allstarteam der Titelkämpfe.
Mit vier Champions League-Siegen zwischen 1980 und 2016 ist auch der Meister aus dem Lande des Weltmeisters ein großer Name der Sportart, und das gern strapazierte Word „Triple“ hat im kroatischen Wasserball mittlerweile zudem eine etwas andere Bedeutung: Dazu gehören nicht nur der nationale Meistertitel und der Sieg in der Champions League, sondern auch der Erfolg in der post-jugoslawischen Adria-Liga. Zum Triple fehlte dem Starensemble aus Dubrovnik in der vergangenen Saison nicht viel: Einzig das Champions League-Endspiel ging nach einem großen Finalwochenende mit 5:10 gegen Ungarns Topklub Szolnoki VSC verloren.
Erstaunlicherweise sind die Kroaten diesmal ein punktgleicher Tabellennachbar der Niedersachsen: Das Team von der Adriaküste unterlag zum Auftakt überraschend mit 11:12 beim Wild Card-Neuling Dynamo Moskau (Russland), fegte allerdings am zweiten Spieltag Serbiens Meister Partizan Belgrad gleicht mit 16:5 aus Halle. „Die sind dennoch Favorit“, sagt Hannovers Trainer Karsten Seehafer, der sich dennoch über die bisherigen Saisonauftritte seines Teams freuen konnte. Der 8:6-Auftaktsieg gegen Italiens Vizemeister AN Brescia und die unglückliche 7:8-Auswärtsniederlage beim ungarischen Vertreter OSC Budapest haben den Niedersachsen nicht nur national wie international viel Lob beschert, sondern auch Werbung für die Sportart gemacht.
Die Niedersachsen wollen daher erneut ihre Chance suchen: „Wenn wir einen guten Tag erwischen, ist es auch möglich, gegen Dubrovnik zu gewinnen. Ich gehe davon aus, dass wir einen guten Tag haben können“, gibt es sich Julian Real nach den bisherigen Saisonauftritten erneut angriffslustig. Jenen besagten „guten Tag“ gab es vergangene Saison übrigens schon einmal, als die Niedersachsen beim Hinspiel sogar in Dubrovnik ein 15:15-Unentschieden erzwangen. Beim Wiedersehen in Hannover könnte der Seehafer-Sieben durchaus auch schon eine Punkteteilung bereits weiterhelfen: Die Kroaten gelten neben Griechenlands Meister Olympiakos Piräus als das aussichtsreichste Team der Gruppe A, so dass sich selbst ein Zähler gut machen würde.
