Auftaktspiel gegen das Team der SGW Leimen/Mannheim
(BM) Am Ende war der Gegner besser: Die Mannschaft um PSV-Trainer Daniel Steiner musste sich den Favoriten der Spielgemeinschaft Leimen/Mannheim am vergangenen Samstag beim ersten Spiel der Saison 2017-18 in der 2. Wasserballliga Süd mit 14:17 geschlagen geben.
„14 Tore gegen eine Top-Mannschaft wie Leimen/Mannheim sind gut, aber 17 zu bekommen, ist zu viel“, fiel das Gesamtfazit von PSV-Kapitän Robert Berghoff aus. Dabei hatten die PSV Wasserballer den Anfang ein wenig verschlafen: zu wenig Druck zeigte man in der Verteidigung, sodass Mannheim in den ersten Minuten mit 0:2 davon zog. Die Mannschaft um Kapitän Berghoff glich aus, doch die Mannheimer Wasserballer bauten durch schnelles Umschaltspiel in den folgenden Minuten ihre Führung auf drei Tore aus. Dabei sah PSV-Neuzugang Bojan Mrdja im Tor der Gastgeber bei dem einen oder andern Schuss nicht gut aus. Auch das zweite Viertel verlief ähnlich und Mannheim/Leimen ging mit einer 9:7-Führung in die Halbzeit.
Nach der Halbzeitpause schienen die PSV Wasserballer dann aber langsam ihren Rhythmus gefunden zu haben: in der Verteidigung ließ man durch gezieltes Pressing wenig zu und im Angriff traf PSV-Center Oliver Schmalzing zur ersten Führung (10:9) im Spiel. Doch einmal mehr erwies sich Leimen/Mannheims Torschütze Kai Widmann als Problem für die Gastgeber, sodass er mit seinen zwei folgenden Toren die PSV-Führung wieder wettmachte. Im daran anschließenden Überzahlspiel hatte der PSV erneut die Chance einen Ausgleich zu erlangen, doch Kapitän Berghoff konnte den Schuss nicht im Tor unterbringen. Mike Troll machte es durch seinen 11:12 Anschlusstreffer nochmal spannend. Kurz darauf ergriffen aber wieder die Gäste das Ruder und erzielten einen weiteren Überzahltreffer durch Timo Sona. Neuer Zwischenstand zum Ende des dritten Viertels: 11:13. Alles war noch offen.
Auch im darauffolgenden Spielviertel behielten die Mannheimer Wasserballer jedoch die Nase vorne und ließen mit einer zwischenzeitlichen fünf Tore Führung die Stuttgarter endgültig hinter sich. Alle weiteren Anschlusstreffer der Hausherren sorgten lediglich für Ergebniskosmetik (14:17).
Insgesamt war Trainer Steiner mit der Leistung seiner Mannschaft aber nicht unzufrieden: „Wir haben gezeigt, wenn wir konsequent in der Verteidigung und im Angriff unser Spiel durchziehen, dass wir eine Mannschaft wie Leimen/Mannheim schlagen können. In der Verteidigung hätten wir von Anfang an präsenter sein müssen.“ Nun gilt es diese Fehler im nächsten Heimspiel gegen Fulda am 25.11.17 abzustellen. Steiner rechnet mit einer ausgeglichenen Partie: „Fulda ist eine schwimmstarke und taktisch gut eingespielte Mannschaft. Wenn wir aber an den guten Ansätzen aus dem Leimen Spiel anknüpfen, dann ist auf jeden Fall was drin für uns.“
