Der deutsche Rekordmeister Spandau 04 hat im zweiten Spiel der Champions-League-Hauptrunde den ersten Sieg gefeiert. Die Berliner bezwangen den spanischen Vizemeister CN Sabadell nach guter ersten Halbzeit mit 11:8 (4:1, 2:0, 3:4, 2:3). Damit rehabilitierte sich der DSV-Vertreter für das klare 5:11-Auswärtsniederlage zwei Wochen zuvor zum Auftakt beim montenegrinischen Meister Jadran Herceg Novi und wahrte damit die Chance für das Endrundenturnier. Erfolgreichster Werfer im ersten von sieben Heimspielen (!) des diesjährigen Wettbewerbs war Centerspieler Mateo Cuk mit drei Treffern.
Nach den Spandauer Niederlagen in beiden bisherigen Toppartien der Saison kamen Spiel und Gegner genau zur rechten Zeit: Der Gastgeber hatte im Eröffnungsabschnitt mit einer 4:1-Führung einen Start nach Maß und musste an diesem Abend einzig beim 1:1-Ausgleich (4.) kurzzeitig den Gleichstand hinnehmen. Die erstmals nach langen Jahren erstmals wieder in der Hauptrunde vertretenen Gäste aus der katalonischen Industriestadt wirkten gegen die gut eingestellten Berliner einfallslos, und Spandau erhöhte kurz nach Beginn des zweiten Abschnitts nach einem Doppelschlag von Mateo Cuk und Dennis Strelezkij dann sogar auf 6:1 (11.) für den DSV-Vertreter, der nach mehreren personellen Ausfällen in der Vorbereitung noch nicht vollständig auf höchstem Niveau agieren kann.
Der Rest des zweiten Abschnitts verlief dann aber torlos, und in der Folge kamen die Gäste jetzt auch insgesamt besser ins Spiel. Die zweite Hälfte ging in der Einzelbilanz sogar mit 7:5 Toren an den spanischen Vizemeister. Spandau ließ jetzt die letzte Konsequenz etwas vermissen, geriet aber nicht mehr in Gefahr. 19 Sekunden vor dem Spielende kamen die Spanier zwar beim 8:10 einmal noch bis auf zwei Treffer heran, allerdings traf Neuzugang Tiberiu Negrean noch einmal zum11:8-Endstand. Der deutsche Meister fuhr damit wichtige Punkte ein und hat nun drei weitere Wochen Zeit, die eigene Formkurve weiter anzuheben.
Der Erfolg kam auch deshalb zur rechten Zeit, da der kommende Champions League-Kontrahent um einiges stärker eingeschätzt wird: Im nächsten Hauptrundenspiel haben die Berliner erneut Heimrecht und empfangen am 29. Mai Titelverteidiger Szolnoki VSC aus Ungarn, der seine beiden ersten Partien im laufenden Wettbewerb jeweils klar gewonnen und sich am vergangenen Wochenende zudem im Duell mit Euro Cup-Gewinner Ferencvaros Budapest (ebenfalls Ungarn) nun auch den europäischen Supercup hat.
