In einem intensiven Auswahlverfahren konnte der SV Bayer 08 Uerdingen für die kommende Saison den 32-jährigen gebürtigen Griechen George Triantafyllou unter Vertrag nehmen. Der diplomierte Sportlehrer und Wasserballtrainer wird gemeinsam mit seiner Frau und seinem 5-jährigen Sohn nach Krefeld übersiedeln und neben der Betreuung des Bundesligateams der Frauen weitere Aufgaben beim SV Bayer 08 in der Jugendarbeit, der Schwimmausbildung sowie in der Kooperation mit den Schulen übernehmen. Frühere Trainerstationen des ehemaligen Spielers in der ersten griechischen Liga (u.a. Vouliagmeni Nautical Club) waren u.a. der Lille Water Polo Club (Frankreich), City of Manchester Water Polo Club (England) sowie das weibliche Nationalteam Englands.
Horst Hartung, der das Team bisher zusammen mit Andraes Kammermeier in der Vorbereitung betreut hat, wird diese Aufgabe fortsetzen und George Triantafyllou bei seinem Start unterstützen. Die erste anstehende Aufgabe ist das Finale um den Supercup, in dem der neuformierte Deutsche Meister am 21. Oktober 2017 in Heidelberg auf das starke Team des Pokalsiegers Nikar Heidelberg treffen wird.

Wir werden schauen, wie sich das junge Team entwickelt, Es gibt keinerlei Erwartungen, dass das Team in der Eliteliga um Medaillen mitspielt, wobei wir es natürlich nicht ablehnen würden.“
