Deutschlands Nachwuchs steht bei den U17-Europameisterschaften in Gzira (Malta) bei Kampf um die Medaillenrunde vor dem sportlichen K. o.: Am zweiten Spieltag des 16-Nationen-Turniers unterlag die DSV-Auswahl in der Vorrundengruppe B nach hartem Kampf mit (1:2, 1:2, 1:1, ) gegen den direkten Rivalen Rumänien und hat damit nur noch eine geringe Chance, den für das Weiterkommen notwendigen dritten Platz zu erreichen. Letzter Vorrundengegner im Tal-Qroqq-Schwimmsportkomplex ist am heutigen Mittwoch von 10:15 Uhr an mit Spanien einer Medaillenaspiranten dieser Titelkämpfe.
Das Spiel hatte aus DSV-Sicht mit der 1:0-Führung durch Vitor Pavicic-Capucho (3.) bestens begonnen, doch vier Gegentreffer in Serie ließen den deutschen Nachwuchs in weniger als sechs Spielminuten auf 1:4 (11.) zurückfallen. Mit zwei Toren von Zoran Bozic kam die DSV-Auswahl im dritten Abschnitt kurzzeitig noch einmal auf 3:4 (20.) heran, doch insgesamt blieb die Trefferausbeute in der heutigen Partie einfach zu gering. Bereits beim COMEN-Cup im montenegrinischen Niksic hatte die die DSV-Auswahl im dortigen Platzierungsspiel mit 5:9 das Nachsehen gehabt.
Schützenhilfe gewährt der deutschen Mannschaft allerdings noch eine letzte Restchance auf das Weiterkommen, als im Nachmittagsabschnitt Italien im Duell der beiden Gruppenfavoriten mit 13:10 gegen Spanien siegreich blieb. Unabhängig vom Ausgang des Parallelduells zwischen Italien und Rumänien reicht der DSV-Auswahl im letzten Gruppenspiel damit ein knapper Sieg gegen Spanien, um den zum Weiterkommen notwendigen dritten Platz zu erreichen. Allerdings gelten die Iberer nach den Eindrücken des Sommers als klarer Favorit, und im Falle eines Punktverlustes würden die Deutschen in den zwei verbliebenen Partien von Gzira nur noch um die Plätze 13 bis 16 kämpfen.
